History

As a part-time programming consultant to other departments in the Agawam school system in the early 1970’s, mathematics teacher John Whalley purchased a small software-consulting firm that had some “live” clients. Working after school and summers out of the basement of his home in Southwick, Massachusetts, he began to build a customer base serving a small, but varied, lot of clients. In 1979, John took his experience teaching students programming on the school’s then-new computer and started Whalley Computer Associates, Inc.

In the spring of 1984, John moved out of his basement to a commercial site in Southwick. Less than a year later rapid growth forced another move to a much larger facility across the street in the Grist Mill Plaza.

John fully dedicated his efforts to his rapidly growing company by leaving his teaching position in June of 1985. A few months later, Paul Whalley left his position as a Cobol programmer at MassMutual Life Insurance Company to join his brother John, becoming Whalley Computer’s fourth full time employee and its first full time outside sales person. The acquisition of customers such as Northeast Utilities, United Technologies, General Electric and Cigna helped fund the company’s rapid growth.

Meanwhile, one of John’s students, Tom Hanson, had been programming innovative custom software applications that allowed area schools and businesses to automate their procedures. The School Financial Package, along with a manufacturing and distribution software package were another major reason for WCA’s rapid growth during this period. Our WCA software customers utilized our full range of services and remain loyal customers today.

Dean LeClerc joined WCA as our first full time repair technician. Dean rapidly became one of the most knowledgeable network technicians in the region. Our leadership position in the networking area fueled another growth period at WCA.

Business expansion quickly forced Whalley Computer to purchase and move into its fourth Southwick location at the end of 1986. A second location was opened in Boston in 1987 to better serve the clients based in Eastern Massachusetts. That office was relocated to Milford, Massachusetts a couple of years later, and now serves Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Another important event that would have a tremendous positive effect on the evolution of Whalley Computer Associates from a small, family owned business to one of the largest computer resellers in the United States, occurred when one of our Milford sales representatives, Peter Aldrich, began selling products to the EMC Corporation. They rapidly became and remain our largest customer. This has been a mutually beneficial relationship where both companies have grown together.

Today, Whalley Computers' corporate office is located in our new 62,500 square foot “state of the art” office building located at One Whalley Way in Southwick, Massachusetts. In a business market where 80% of computer companies fail in less than five years, Whalley Computer employs over 140 computer professionals at its two business locations, serving a customer base of over 30,000 customers. Providing hardware, software, programming, technical, networking and training services. Whalley Computer is still a family owned business totally focused on providing the best service available anywhere in the United States.
