What is Server Virtualization
Server Virtualization is defined as one server doing the job of multiple servers, by sharing the resources of a single server across multiple environments making it possible to run multiple operating systems and multiple applications on the same computer at the same time. In laymen’s terms virtualization software enables you to consolidate many servers onto a few servers by using a software package (virtualization software) that totally separates multiple software packages on one computer. This allows your organization to satisfy the manufacturer’s need to isolate their software from all others without dedication a server to each application.
For example, a company has thirteen servers running thirteen different applications because each of the software manufacturer’ requires a dedicated server. As a result of adding a server for every new application per server the average server is only using 12% of its capacity. For this example let’s assume that this company replaces four of the servers each year, completely refreshing all twelve servers every three years.
Creating multiple virtual servers on several individual physical servers allows this company to put all thirteen applications on the four best servers. Some software packages can not be virtualized and a server must be dedicated to them. For this example let’s assume one of the applications need a dedicated server. We end up with three servers that have four applications on them and one server dedicated to one software package. The four applications on each server are totally separated by the virtualization software.
The company can then redeploy the next best four servers and duplicate the four original servers and install them at another site. If for any reason your primary servers experience problems the off site system will kick in so that you have total redundancy and no down time.
You can decommission the other four servers and use them for spare units, spare parts, sell them or dispose of them.
You save money on hardware acquisition because you don’t have to refresh those four decommissioned computers ever again and can skip one year of refreshing them. Additionally, you have created a completely redundant data center that will go a long way to satisfying your companies disaster recovery/business continuance requirements and assure your company doesn’t experience down time.
You will also reduce your server’s electricity consumption by one-third. The reduction of the amount of heat generated will result in a significant reduction in cooling costs as well. You will not only be saving alot of money by reducing your maintenance costs, but the added bonus in that these benefits can also be counted in your "Go Green" initiative if your company has intituted one.
This is the hottest topic in our industry and with all of the benefits if affords a company it easy to see why. We and can help you every step of the way. You can contact us at wcabiz@wca.com provide a free consultation.
Benefits of Server Virtualization
Virtualizing your data Center allows you to significantly reduce the number of servers required. This leads to:
- A reduction in the number and cost of your servers
- A reduction in the use of company time and resources required to maintain and service your servers, effectively cutting operational costs
- An increase in the utilization and flexibility of existing hardware
- A reduction in costs required to cool the Data Center
- A lower cost to implement and maintain a disaster recovery and business continuance initiative
- An improvement in response time for disaster recovery
- Greater security
- Elimination of physical and geographical limitations by hosting operating systems at one site
Join the millions of people around the world who use virtualization to save time, money, and energy while achieving more with the computer hardware you already own?” Virtual servers and virtual desktops let you host multiple operating systems and multiple applications locally and in remote locations, freeing you from physical and geographical limitations in addition to energy savings and lower capital expenses due to more efficient use of your hardware resources. Achieving high availability of resources, better desktop management, increased security, and improved disaster recovery processes when you build a virtual infrastructure.
Going Green
Server virtualization is Going Green! Your company can earn re-bates through VMware. You will be using less energy & hardware essentially reducing your company’s environmental footprint.
Server virtualization will encourage going green by reducing the energy demands of your data center by right-sizing your IT infrastructure through consolidation and dynamic management of computer capacity across a pool of servers. By going green, it will lead to an energy cost reduction of 80%. It will also power down servers without affecting application or uses. Another key benefit, it will decrease cost’s and improve service levels. Let Whalley Computer Associates team up with VM Ware to take your company to the next level with server virtualization.
