A virtual private network (VPN) is a private data network that makes use of the public telecommunication infrastructure, maintaining privacy through the use of tunneling protocol and security procedures. A virtual private network can be contrasted with a system of owned or leased lines that can only be used by one company. The idea of a VPN is to give your company the same capabilities as one with full private data infrastructure at much lower cost by using the shared public infrastructure, the internet, rather than a private one. Using a virtual private network involves encrypting data before sending it through the public network and decrypting it at the receiving end. An additional level of security involves encrypting not only the data but also the originating and receiving network addresses. A virtual private network makes it possible to have secured sharing of public resources for your companies private data.
Virtual Private Networks exist mainly in two topologies, Site-to-Site and Remote Access. With Site-to-Site VPN multiple locations and multiple LAN’s are joined to create a companies Intranet. Using this VPN method a company can connect their local area networks and share data constantly between locations. The Remote Access solution allows access to a company’s local area network from any location provided they have Internet access. This solution is ideal for companies who have employees who travel and would benefit from having access to the information and applications located at the main facility.
